Job Purpose:
The Business Intelligence & Reporting Specialist is a pivotal role within our institution’s data ecosystem, designed to transform raw financial data into actionable intelligence that fuels strategic decision-making and operational excellence. This position exists to support the institution’s mission of advancing knowledge and innovation, particularly in the field of Artificial Intelligence, by providing reliable, accurate, and insightful financial reporting and analytics. The specialist will design, develop, and maintain robust BI solutions, automate data processes, and serve as a crucial advisor to the academic, research, and operational staff, empowering them to answer complex questions with data.
Key Responsibilities:
Data Architecture, Advanced Analytics Development & Execution:
- Design, develop, and deploy enterprise-level reports, interactive dashboards, and data visualizations using tools such as Tableau, Power BI, or similar platforms to meet the strategic and operational needs of various stakeholders
- Develop, optimize, and maintain scalable ETL/ELT processes and data pipelines to automate the ingestion and transformation of data from diverse source systems (e.g., Student Information Systems, HR, Finance, Research grants, experimental AI data).
- Write complex and efficient SQL queries to extract, manipulate, and analyze large and complex financial datasets from data warehouses and relational databases.
- Collaborate with IT and key stakeholders to operationalize data pipelines that support machine learning models and advanced analytics projects, ensuring data quality and accessibility.
- Implement and advocate for data governance and security best practices, ensuring the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of all institutional financial data in compliance with policies.
- Proactively analyze data to identify trends, anomalies, and insights, providing a narrative that supports institutional assessment, accreditation, and strategic planning.
- Support data migration and validation processes, maintaining financial accuracy during ERP implementation.
Budget Management & Reporting:
- Manage the entire Financial BI project lifecycle from gathering requirements and designing technical specifications to development, testing, deployment, and ongoing support and refinement.
- Create and maintain comprehensive documentation for all BI solutions, including data dictionaries, process flows, and user guides to ensure sustainability and knowledge transfer.
- Monitor and troubleshoot the performance of financial reports, dashboards, and data processes, implementing optimizations to ensure speed and reliability for end-users.
- Administer and configure the Budget Office’s BI and analytics platforms, including user access management, security permissions, and software version upgrades.
- Develop and automate standardized reports for recurring institutional needs, such as enrollment statistics, faculty workload, research expenditure tracking, and student success metrics.
Other Duties:
- Perform all other duties as reasonably directed by the line manager that are commensurate with these functional objectives.
Academic Qualification:
- Bachelor’s degree in Business Analytics, Information Science.
- Master’s degree in a related field will be strongly preferred.
Professional Experience:
Essential
- A minimum of 5-7 years of progressive, hands-on experience in a Business Intelligence, Data Analytics, or Data Engineering role.
- Designing and developing enterprise-grade dashboards and visualizations using industry-standard tools (e.g., Tableau, Power BI, Qlik)
- Writing advanced, optimized SQL code for complex querying, data transformation, and analysis within a data warehouse environment (e.g., Snowflake, BigQuery, Redshift, Azure SQL Data Warehouse)
- Experience in developing and managing comprehensive budgets within complex institutions.
- Designing, building, and maintaining automated ETL/ELT processes and data pipelines using tools such as SSIS, Talend, Matillion, Alteryx, or scripting with Python.
- Extracting, cleansing, and analyzing large, complex datasets from multiple source systems to solve business problems.
- Managing the end-to-end lifecycle of BI projects, from requirement gathering with stakeholders to deployment and support.
- Working within formal data governance, security, and change management framework.
Preferred
- Experience working in a higher education, academic research, or other not-for-profit environment, with an understanding of typical data systems (e.g., Banner, Workday, PeopleSoft) and regulatory compliance.
- Demonstrated experience supporting data science or advanced analytics teams, particularly in preparing data for machine learning and AI models.
- Experience with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP) and their native data and analytics services.
- Familiarity with statistical programming languages (Python, R) for data manipulation and analysis.
- Arabic and/or another language working proficiency.
