Job Purpose:

MBZUAI is seeking an Arabic Content Editor to produce, translate, review, and edit the university’s communications and marketing materials in Arabic, ensuring clarity, accuracy, audience appropriateness, compliance with established style guidelines, alignment with MBZUAI’s brand identity, and effective support of the university’s strategic and operational objectives.

 

Key Responsibilities:

Technical and Corporate Writing:

  • Work closely with the Head of Content Strategy and English Editor to identify and produce news stories and multimedia content showcasing the academic research and innovation of MBZUAI faculty members, researchers, postdocs, students, and collaborators.
  • Write compelling multimedia and print stories for a variety of academic, industry, government, and public audiences that present the AI research and innovation of MBZUAI in a manner that supports the MBZUAI brand and the university’s strategic and operational objectives, as well as the wider goals of AI excellence of Abu Dhabi and the greater UAE.
  • Write content that supports and promotes MBZUAI’s faculty and their achievements in a manner consistent with MBZUAI’s strategic and operational objectives.
  • Write content that supports and promotes MBZUAI’s Chairman, President, and senior executive managers in a manner consistent with MBZUAI’s strategic and operational objectives.
  • Ensure all writing is audience-appropriate, free of grammatical and spelling errors, conforms with the MBZUAI style guide.
  • Develop and adapt content for all MBZUAI’s communication platforms including the website, marketing literature, and faculty announcements.

Editing and translation:

  • Edit and translate MBZUAI communications produced by other authors and departments.
  • Conduct developmental editing and Arabization for key stories and important documents and/or publications: make suggestions for content, organization, and mode of delivery based upon analyses of competing works, audiences, market, and other appropriate references; review drafts; and support the development of the work to publication.
  • Carry out substantive editing of authors’ writing as required: identify and resolve problems of overall clarity or accuracy; reorganize content; rewrite segments to improve readability and flow of ideas; make editorial suggestions and create new drafts of stories, documents, and publications for approval.
  • Produce compelling campaign content, slogans, and copywriting in Arabic that complements the English versions while engaging an Arabic audience
  • Copyedit authors’ writing, correcting spelling, grammar, punctuation, syntax, and word usage preserving the meaning and voice of the original text while ensuring compliance with MBZUAI brand requirements.
  • Proofread Arabic writing and check and correct problems in page makeup, layout, color separation, or type prior to publication.

Operational Planning:

  • Contribute to the development of the editorial calendar in collaboration with the Head of Content Strategy, English Editor, Associate Head of Media and Stakeholder Relations, and Digital Media Specialist paying particular attention to the preparation and release of content to support events such as global academic conferences, UN observances, UAE national days, and Abu Dhabi government events.

Other duties:

  • Perform all other duties as reasonably directed by the line manager that are commensurate with these functional objectives.

 

Academic Qualifications:

  • A minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in English, communications, or other relevant discipline;
  • A postgraduate degree is preferred.

 

Professional Experience:

Essential

  • At least three years’ prior employment successfully working as an editor preferably in a university and/or within the technology sector.
  • Verbal and written English language proficiency at a fluent, superior level
  • Experience carrying out copyediting, proofreading, developmental editing, and substantive editing of authors’ writing, providing tactful and relevant feedback and improving writing to meet organization standards.
  • Demonstrated experience in science communications and experience managing communications in a technology domain, preferably promoting AI.
  • Demonstrated experience developing, sharing, and effectively promoting science and research content on social media.
  • Demonstrated success creating and directing digital content that supports the achievement of organization strategy.
  • Experience giving directions to freelancers, media partners, and managing contracts.
  • Demonstrated experience drafting speaking notes, scripts, ads, and strategy documents, including on behalf of senior executives.
  • Experience publishing material in multiple contexts including academic, corporate, and electronic publishing.
  • Proven record of managing complex projects, carrying out work requiring attention to detail, meeting deadlines, and achieving results.

Preferred

  • Professional credentialling in content creation and/or editing.
  • Experience successfully working in the UAE.
