Job Purpose:

MBZUAI is recruiting a Writing and Information Literacy Specialist responsible for developing, coordinating, and delivering comprehensive writing support and information literacy instructions for students. This role integrates academic support with library instruction to enhance student success through personalized writing consultations, classroom-based sessions, and targeted outreach programs. The specialist promotes critical thinking, effective research methodologies, and the ethical use of information.

 

Key Responsibilities:

Writing Center:

  • Provide individual and group writing consultations to students across various disciplines.
  • Design and deliver workshops focusing on academic writing skills, citation styles, and writing resources.
  • Collaborate with faculty to support and integrate writing initiatives throughout the curriculum.
  • Develop comprehensive writing resources (e.g., handouts, videos, guides) for use on the library website and other learning platforms.

Information Literacy:

  • Design and deliver information literacy sessions tailored to courses across diverse subject areas.
  • Create engaging and effective instructional materials, including research guides, tutorials, and LibGuides.
  • Collaborate with faculty to incorporate research instruction into course curricula.
  • Regularly assess the effectiveness of information literacy programs and implement improvements based on feedback and evaluation data.
  • Support the development and implementation of library policies and student-focused resources.

Student Library Support:

  • Oversee all aspects of student experiences, including scholarly advising, and student academic literacy development.
  • Coordinate and deliver library orientation sessions for all students, including international and visiting graduate students.
  • Communicate clearly and effectively regarding library policies and international standards for scholarly referencing.
  • Serve as a primary contact for students, addressing concerns and collaboratively resolving academic or research-related issues.

Other duties:

  • Perform all other duties as reasonably directed by the line manager that are commensurate with these functional objectives.

 Academic Qualifications:

  • A minimum of a Master’s in English literature, linguistics composition or a related field
  • Additional post-graduate degree is strongly preferred.

 Professional Experience: 

Essential

  • At least 3 years of progressively responsible experience in graduate education, academic administration, or student affairs at a research-intensive university.
  • Experience in academic writing instruction and/or research support.
  • Strong knowledge of information literacy and teaching strategies.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility in student support services.

Preferred

  • Library and Information Science (MLIS) from an ALA-accredited program.
  • Experience working in a library or writing center setting.
  • Familiarity with instructional technologies and learning management systems (e.g., Moodle, Canvas, Blackboard).
  • Experience developing digital learning objects.
  • Understanding of citation management tools (e.g., EndNote, Zotero).
