Job Purpose:

MBZUAI is seeking a creative, detail-oriented, and strategically minded Social Media Specialist with expertise and enthusiasm for technical and/or scientific content. This role will convert complex ideas from domains such as artificial intelligence, engineering, and scientific research into compelling and accessible digital narratives tailored to diverse audiences across social platforms. The specialist will primarily manage and publish content on platforms such as LinkedIn and X, which host the majority of MBZUAI technical and research-focused content. Additionally, this role will adapt content effectively for visual and interactive storytelling on platforms including Instagram and TikTok. The specialist will also be responsible for day-to-day social media management, developing content calendars, and increasing audience engagement by presenting technical topics clearly, creatively, and effectively.

 

Key Responsibilities:

Content Creation and Publishing:

  • Identify compelling stories from MBZUAI’s departments and research teams, collaborating closely with editorial and social media colleagues to develop targeted content strategies for technical and research-focused narratives.
  • Write, edit, and publish original social media posts, translating complex technical and scientific concepts into clear, engaging digital stories.
  • Partner with researchers, engineers, and subject-matter experts to capture key messages and effectively adapt them for digital and social platforms.
  • Capture and produce dynamic mobile content at events and conferences, highlighting technical and research activities to relevant audiences.
  • Clearly brief the social production team to create impactful multimedia assets, including graphics, short videos, and audiograms.

Social Media Management:

  • Lead and maintain the social media content calendar for technical and research content; plan, schedule, and consistently publish relevant content, aligning closely with MBZUAI’s overall communication objectives.
  • Monitor audience engagement and online conversations, promptly responding to queries or escalating issues as appropriate.
  • Identify and leverage opportunities to participate in trending discussions related to technology, science, and innovation.
  • Collaborate with paid social media colleagues to identify promotional opportunities, ensuring organic content effectively complements broader campaign initiatives.

Performance Analysis:

  • Monitor and evaluate social media KPIs using platform-native and third-party analytics tools.
  • Regularly report on content performance, engagement statistics, and audience insights.
  • Leverage analytical insights to refine content strategies, optimize publishing schedules, and enhance platform effectiveness.

Collaboration and Coordination:

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including Marketing, Public Relations, Product, and Production, to ensure content aligns with organizational initiatives and key messages.
  • Provide social media support for campaigns, product launches, and important technical and research events, such as conferences, paper presentations, and demonstrations.
  • Manage relationships with external agencies, freelancers, and vendors to ensure timely, high-quality content production.
  • Maintain a consistent and professional tone across all channels, adapting content appropriately for diverse audience segments.

Other Duties:

  • Perform all other duties as reasonably directed by the line manager that are commensurate with these functional objectives.

Academic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Public Relations, Communications, Marketing, Journalism, STEM, or a related field.
  • A postgraduate degree will be preferred.

Professional Experience:

Essential

  • Minimum of 2–4 years of experience managing professional social media accounts, ideally in tech, science, or innovation sectors.
  • At least 3 years of experience working with STEM teams.
  • Proven ability to create and manage content around technical or research-driven subjects.
  • Exceptional writing, editing, and storytelling skills.
  • Deep understanding of platform trends, algorithms, and best practices.
  • Familiarity with content creation tools (e.g., Canva, Adobe Suite, Figma), and scheduling/analytics tools (e.g., Hootsuite, Sprout Social, Buffer, Later).
  • Analytical mindset with ability to translate insights into action.

Preferred

  • Working knowledge of Arabic to support content review and collaboration with Arabic-language editors and writers.
  • Understanding of paid social campaigns and A/B testing.
  • Basic knowledge of SEO, CMS and Google Analytics.
  • Experience of creating social assets from long-form content such as technical papers, white papers, webinars etc.
  • Understanding of compliance and ethical considerations in public communication.
