Job Purpose:
The Head of Engineering at the AI Research and Development department is responsible for leading and managing the engineering team to drive innovation and development of AI technologies. This role involves overseeing the design, development, and implementation of AI solutions that align with the department’s research objectives and technological advancements. The Head of Engineering collaborates with cross-functional teams to ensure the successful execution of AI projects and initiatives. Providing strategic direction and technical expertise, this position guides the team in achieving research and development goals in the field of artificial intelligence. The Head of Engineering plays a critical role in fostering a culture of innovation, collaboration, and excellence within the engineering team to drive AI research outcomes and organizational success.
Key Responsibilities:
- Leadership and Team Management
- Lead, mentor, and manage a team of Project managers, AI engineers, Architects, and other technical teams to ensure alignment with departmental and institutional goals.
- Provide strategic direction and guidance to the engineering team in the execution of AI research and development projects.
- Engineering Strategy Development
- Develop and implement engineering strategies that support the research and development objectives of MBZUAI.
- Identify opportunities for technological advancements and innovation within the AI engineering domain.
- Ensure that engineering solutions align with industry best practices and standards.
- Project Planning and Execution
- Oversee the planning, execution, and delivery of AI research and development engineering projects within set timelines and budgets.
- Coordinate with cross-functional teams to ensure seamless integration of engineering solutions.
- Monitor project progress, identify risks, and implement mitigation strategies to ensure successful project completion.
- Technical Expertise and Guidance
- Provide technical expertise and guidance on complex engineering challenges to support AI research and development objectives.
- Stay updated on industry trends and advancements in AI engineering to drive continuous improvement in practices.
- Collaborate with team members to solve technical issues and optimize engineering solutions.
- Project Management Experience
- Demonstrate a proven track record in managing complex AI engineering projects from initiation to completion, with expertise in project planning, resource allocation, risk management, and ensuring project deliverables are met on time and within budget.
- Continuous Learning and Development
- Mentor and coach team members to foster a culture of continuous learning and professional development.
- Identify training needs and opportunities for skill enhancement within the engineering team.
- Quality Assurance and Compliance
- Ensure adherence to quality standards, regulations, and best practices in AI engineering project delivery.
- Implement quality assurance processes to monitor and evaluate the performance of engineering solutions.
- Address any compliance issues or deviations from standards promptly and effectively.
- Other Duties
- Carry out all other duties as reasonably directed by the Line Manager, to support the department and MBZUAI’s objectives.
Academic Qualification:
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, preferably in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Software Engineering, Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, or Data Science.
Professional Experience:
- Minimum 7-10 years of experience in a leadership role within an engineering department.
- Proven track record of successfully leading and delivering complex AI research-based engineering projects.
- Experience in managing cross-functional teams and working collaboratively with diverse stakeholders.
- Strong technical background in engineering disciplines relevant to the AI research and development field.
- Experience in developing and implementing AI engineering strategies to support organizational goals.
- The Head of the Engineering Team should possess a blend of academic excellence, industry experience, and leadership skills that are on par with the standards set by the prestigious institutions.

- They should have a strong research background, publication record, and experience in driving innovative research initiatives.
